Protection behind Perfectionism: Counselling in South Surrey, BC

Perfectionism is often misunderstood as simply striving for high standards or success. Another way to look at perfectionism is as a protective strategy.

From a nervous system and attachment theory lens, perfectionism is not just a mindset; it is an embodied survival response.

Perfectionism emerges as a way to maintain connection, avoid rejection, and secure a sense of worth: If I can just get everything right, I will be accepted. If I get everything right, I will be safe.

Over time, this pattern becomes deeply embedded, not only in thoughts and beliefs, but in the body. Individuals who struggle with perfectionism often carry chronic tension, bracing, or a sense of constant pressure. Their nervous system may remain in a state of hypervigilance, scanning for mistakes or signs of disapproval. Even in safe environments, the body may react as though failure would lead to disconnection or loss.

Perfectionism can be understood as a protective part of the self, one that is trying to guard against the felt experience of shame (The feeling of "I am bad"). Rather than pathologizing it, therapists can approach this pattern with curiosity and compassion. What is perfectionism trying to prevent? What does the body fear might happen if it lets go?

Working with a therapist familiar with working with the nervous system, the client and therapist can explore the felt sense of perfectionism together, allowing for a safe container to help hold the fear or discomfort and eventually work to tease it apart. By understanding what the perfection is protecting us from, the therapist and client can then work to process the underlying feelings and experiences together where the protection may not be needed anymore.

Ultimately, perfectionism is not the problem. Perfectionism can be an adaptive response to protect us from emotional experiences that may have felt too big to feel on their own before. Counselling can help clients honour the protective role perfectionism has played, while gently supporting the body in discovering new, safer ways of being.
