Many people move through their days feeling functional but not fully there. You get things done, you show up, you say “I’m fine” - yet inside, there’s a sense of numbness or distance. This can be a distance or numbness within our relationships or within ourselves. This is often a response from our nervous system.

Why Disconnection Happens

When stress, overwhelm, or past trauma builds over time, the nervous system may shift into functional freeze — a protective state where emotions and sensations get dialed down so you can keep going. This can look like:

  • feeling muted or numb

  • running on autopilot

  • difficulty naming emotions

  • feeling detached from your body

  • exhaustion without knowing why

Your system isn’t failing — it’s protecting you.

This is often referred to as functional freeze because often times we can continue with our day-to-day functions (work, school, etc.) however, in this state, it becomes difficult for us to connect with our feelings, emotions and bodily sensations.

How Somatic Attachment Therapy Can Help

Somatic therapy works directly with the body and the nervous system, helping you reconnect safely and gradually with your body alongside a therapist. You and your therapist may also work together to learn the origins of your body's protective response By working slowly to reconnect yourself to your body, you begin to feel more present, regulated, and able to respond in a regulated way, rather than just cope.
